Friday September 3 All Day - UPrising! They are blessing our community with a day full of music, food, and games. Its free so come enjoy a piece of community. Take in downtown Grand Rapids. I know I'm looking forward to this. I'll try and get back to this post and give more details. Its all day and its free, what more do you need to know? A little bit of what the UPrising and Tribe of Judah are up to:
We are trekking around the UP, Michigan, Indiana, and Wisconsin with a one-day FREE music festival with FREE food and games and fellowship. We are teaming up with a few bands and musicians to bring a great event to small, medium, and large communities for nearly two week beginning August 26th and ending on September 9th.
Saturday September 18 9am-Noon Human Trafficking Outreach - This is an event to make the city of Grand Rapids aware of modern slavery. Its an active attempt to get the word out by going around the city that morning in teams to hang posters. Teams will meet at Take Hold at 9am where you will be greeted with fair trade coffee and muffins along with worship from our own Micah Hill. Here is the facebook event for more details and to RSVP.
Wednesday September 22 is the opening day of ArtPrize! Take Hold Church is a venue which means we will be open for the duration of the event which is two weeks long. We need many many volunteers just to dedicate their time to watch over the space while it is open. Opening day is 6pm-10pm, Mon-Thur 5pm-8pm, Fri-Sat noon-10pm, Sun noon-6pm. There will be a volunteer sign up sheet at Take Hold and I'll try to get something going online. Its going to be a blast with a lot of people coming in and out.
Friday October 1 - Sunday October 3 Unified Underground in Davidsonville, MD - Last year five of us ventured out to Maryland to attend Unified Underground which is a weekend full of speakers/seminars, bands, and good old time fellowship. We are making the trek again and would like for 20 of us to go together! Money is due by this Sunday [report to Shane] to make the discount otherwise you can purchase your own ticket online at the website linked above. We will be having a couple vehicles going and have a few hotel rooms reserved already. We want to work with you on the travel accommodations because we want you just to experience the weekend. We grew leaps and bounds together as a group last year and only want more people to have that opportunity. Its truly the highlight trip of my year! Check the website for schedule of events, bands and speakers.
Second Punk Rock Baptism
Mark 1 : 4-8
4 This messenger was John the Baptist. He was in the wilderness and preached that people should be baptized to show that they had repented of their sins and turned to God to be forgiven.5 All of Judea, including all the people of Jerusalem, went out to see and hear John. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River. 6 His clothes were woven from coarse camel hair, and he wore a leather belt around his waist. For food he ate locusts and wild honey.
7 John announced: “Someone is coming soon who is greater than I am—so much greater that I’m not even worthy to stoop down like a slave and untie the straps of his sandals. 8 I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit!”
Why punk rock? Because we make do with what we got. We are not near a lake, unable to have a pool or baptismal, but a gallon of water is cheap at the store! We do it on the downtown streets of Grand Rapids to put the "public" in public confession.
Sunday August 22, 2010 our community had our second baptism ever. This past April, on Easter Sunday, we had our first baptism as a congregation and it was special and forever engraved in our memories. This second time around was once again as memorable. Susan, a woman who has joined our community over the summer, gave her life to the Lord exactly four weeks prior. She was obedient and decided to be baptized and shared her testimony with us. Afterwards I'm sure there weren't many dry eyes in the room. It was powerful and the atmosphere was heavy and worshipful. After singing and praying we ventured out onto the street. Shane asked her a few questions and then poured the 64oz of water over her head. Cheering, clapping, and smiles ensued! Everyone gathered around her, laid hands on her, and prayed for her [probably my favorite part!]. Check the video above to experience it for yourself.
CCConference
A few days have passed by and I think the majority of us have caught up on sleep. It was a packed weekend full of teaching, rawness and honesty, difficult issues in the world, Spirit-filled worship, and amazing fellowship.
We are forever grateful to Julie Slagter, Laura Evans, Wretched, Ed Dobson, Steve Argue, Adam Ferguson, Mirf, and Shane for preparing messages for us to hear and being open about their own personal stories.
Grave Robber and All Became New made long treks from northern and southern Indiana to bless us with times of musical worship but also blessed us with their friendship. Michigan bands Desiring Dead Flesh, The Crowned Virgin, Mountain Goat, Micah Hill, and The Tuffingtons also put their time and talents into the weekend. Everyone was having fun and smiling at the shows and I'll never forget that aspect.
On Sunday evening we had an amazing spaghetti dinner that was donated along with all the sides and drinks! It felt like the high life with such a tasty spread [no offense to our usual hot dog menu] and it was good to have down time just to relax and get to know those around us. The whole weekend there were intense games of four square taking place in the parking lot with long long lines to get in on the game. I'm pretty sure DDF Brian was King the majority of time. There are pictures floating around of him sporting that shiny gold crown.
From the perspective of a volunteer, I got caught up in the details and my responsibilities. As I would sit and listen to the teaching and as I was spending intimate time in worship with my brothers and sisters in Christ I realized how much this weekend was for me. I learned a lot, related to stories, and was fired up by injustices happening in this world. I'm thankful to the Father for the weekend and my new found friends. I'm thankful for the continual push and encouragement to follow Jesus and to become closer to my Creator from every speaker.
We hope to see you next year and for the rest of you that missed it to mark your calendars for next summer. Share any of your experiences here on the blog! We want to hear from you and what you learned.
ps- The group photo above was just a portion of us that were there this weekend. Sorry to all those we missed! A Saturday picture is in order for next year.

Counter-Culture Conference
CONFERENCE 2010
SATURDAY, JULY 31 & SUNDAY, AUGUST 1
CCC 2010:
Jesus lived a counter-culture life...didn't he? This conference will not ask you to cut yourself off from society and live in a commune with other Christians. This conference will not persuade you to quit your job and hop trains. This conference will not tempt you to abandon your responsibilities and forget the status quo. However, during this conference we will be exploring the radical teachings and nature bending actions of Jesus Christ. Who was he? Who is he? What do his counter-cultural teachings and actions mean for us today? We want to get close to Jesus. We want to take one step closer to him with you. Are you interested in understanding more about him? Do you want to engage in conversation about him? If so...please join us...we will travel toward him together.

COUNTER-CULTURE CHRIST:
Many of the people...believed in Jesus...but some went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. Then the leading priests and Pharisees called the high council together. “What are we going to do?” they asked each other. “This man certainly performs many miraculous signs. If we allow him to go on like this, soon everyone will believe in him. Then the Roman army will come and destroy both our Temple and our nation.” Caiaphas, who was high priest at that time, said, “You don’t know what you’re talking about! You don’t realize that it’s better for you that one man should die for the people than for the whole nation to be destroyed.” He did not say this on his own; as high priest at that time he was led to prophesy that Jesus would die for the entire nation. And not only for that nation, but to bring together and unite all the children of God scattered around the world. So from that time on, the Jewish leaders began to plot Jesus’ death. -John 11:45-53
